PUDCAD PROJECT

1. THE PUDCAD PROJECT

The Project “PUDCAD – Practicing Universal Design Principles in Design Education through a CAD-based Game” has been developed over the three-year period 2017–2020 thanks to financing from the European Community through the Erasmus+ KA203 Programme.
Eight partners have contributed to the creation of the project – six European Union and non-EU universities and two associations – for a total of about thirty researchers and instructors and a hundred students.

The project is tied to one of the priorities laid out by the European Commission: guarantee all people with disabilities complete access to all environments and services in everyday life. The number of people with disabilities at risk of poverty or social exclusion in the world, is in fact much higher with respect to people lacking disabilities. For this reason, the European Commission encourages many organizations to work on this theme and raise public awareness.
Design is recognized as a driver of user-centred innovation and is a key instrument in preventing isolation of people with disabilities in society. Despite the fact that since the 1980s there were architects and designers who started to apply Principles of Universal Design to their projects, its use was still quite limited and rarely present in the education of young designers.

The PUDCAD project offers an empathetic approach and a learning methodology based on game-based learning (Gamification) to teach students of Design and Architecture

about this approach and put it into practice by providing them tools to develop ideas for innovative, accessible design.
The project is divided into:

    1. Learning activities – Workshops;
    2. Research activities – Output;
    3. Presenting activities – Publications and multiplier events.

The final product is a didactic and educational tool inserted in a learning environment planned with the involvement of the users – the students – that have participated in the various phases of design through project workshops defined as follows:

Workshop C4, Milan (Italy), February 2018 – dedicated to the analysis and the re-design of educational environments through the application of the principles of Universal Design.
Workshop C5, Detmold (Germany), October 2018 – dedicated to the application of Inclusive Design parameters for the design of school environments;
Workshop C6, Florence (Italy), May 2019 – dedicated to the development of concepts applicable to the PUDCADGame;
Workshop C7, Lahti (Finland), November 2019 – dedicated to testing the Alpha version of the Game.
During each of the student workshops, instructors and researchers of the Team put into practice methods, processes, and tools for teaching Universal Design.
